Approved to be established by the Ministry of Education in September 2005 with a construction investment of RMB 20 million, the laboratory, after two years of construction, had officially passed the acceptance of the Ministry of Education in February 2008 and has been officially opened to the public for operation. Based on further construction and refinement, the laboratory was renamed the “Key Laboratory of Aquatic Biotechnology of the Ministry of Education” in 2019 and shifted research to the following five directions: genetic breeding and culture & enhancement of aquatic animals and plants, immunity and disease prevention and control of aquatic animals and plants, nutrition and feed of aquatic animals, fishery ecology and environmental protection, and exploitation and utilization of aquatic resources. Centered on the National Strategic Plan for Rural Revitalization, the National Revitalization Plan for Modern Agricultural Seed Industry, and the opinions of China on accelerating the green development of the aquaculture industry, the laboratory considers the national technology system of the modern agricultural industry and, based on the industrial demand, fully utilizes the structural characteristics and resource advantages of Zhejiang's marine economy, focuses on the mixed water environment and characteristic aquaculture species in the East China Sea region inline with the principle of “based in Ningbo, serving Zhejiang, going around China, highlighting key points, and emphasizing practical results”, and remains committed to basic and applied research, leading and supporting the aquaculture industry in Zhejiang and the whole nation.
