Originated from the Key Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology in Zhejiang Province, established in 1996 and affiliated to the national modern agricultural industry technology system, the team has engaged in seaweed breeding, cultivation, and resource processing and utilization for over 20 years, undertaking the main task of algae research and development and promotion in Zhejiang Province. The current academic research undertaken by the team covers multiple research directions, including genetic breeding, efficient and healthy aquaculture of large-scale algae, algae and environmental adaptation, algae diseases and prevention & control, and high-value utilization of algae. The team created a new variety of porphyra haitanensis, “Zhedong No.1”, and for this reason, has consecutively won one second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one first prize, and one second prize in Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award, and one second prize of the Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award for Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education. The team has led 2 national major projects, 7 programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and participated in 3 national key agricultural research and development programs. In addition, the team has published over 250 SCI academic papers in top international journals such as Angelwandte Chemie International, Molecular Biology and Evolution, Carbohydrate Polymers, etc., obtained over 40 authorized patents, edited one work in chief, and participated in 3 works, with funding support exceeding RMB 15 million.
Focusing on large-scale economic seaweed and economic microalgae, the team has established a comprehensive platform for algae breeding, algal analysis, algal bacterial interaction, cellular and animal pharmacology research of natural algae products, multi-omics research of algae, and bioinformatics analysis. The team has independently completed chromosome genome assembly and analysis of porphyra haitanensis and, based on the genome, revealed the adaptive mechanism of algae in response to extreme intertidal environments from multiple levels, such as genes, proteins, and metabolites. The team maintains a good cooperative relationship with enterprises engaged in algae breeding and processing nationwide. It has developed multiple agricultural, food, pharmaceutical, and other products, with an output value of hundreds of millions of yuan.
